Stop Over-Dosing and Start Balancing

Opposites attract for a reason… to achieve that ying and yang of harmony between two forces. Skincare requires the same approach for optimal skin health and appearance.

Yet, it’s easy to over-treat skin within the same families of products… and that’s when balance is lost and problems occur.

For instance, with dry skin you might use multiple moisturizing products all in the same day. You believe it’s helping you fight dry skin. But instead of achieving healthy moisture, you overdosed on hydrating products… and possibly clogged your pores. Where did you go wrong? Not balancing your regime.

OR… say you’re combating oily skin. You attempt to dry it up with acid cleansers, toners and creams. You may even throw in a chemical peel to finish the job. But your end result shows very irritated skin with breakouts and dry patches all at the same time. How does that happen? By overdosing and not balancing.

So we’ve simplified balancing skincare with two rules:

Rule #1 — Balance Acids with Non Acids

Any harsh acids or retinoids should always include nourishing, non-acid partners. A gentle cleanse such as our Green Tea/Pomegranate Cleanser, along with a nourishing non-acid toner, and THEN balancing with the stronger acid product, ensures you’re not over treating.

OR… if you’re using an acid cleanser, such as our Mandelic Acid cleanser and toner, be wary of applying an acid serum on top of those products or adding a retinoid cream. Instead, balance by using an acid and retinoid-free, nourishing moisturizer. Our Green Tea and Pomegranate Moisturizer, or one that’s aloe based, are great options.

Rule #2 — Never Overdose!

Don’t apply an acid toner, followed by a retinoid cream, and then a chemical peel later in the same day. Yikes! Practice moderation with acid products. Try one at a time, and don’t attack your skin with multiple acids. Your skin will fight you back, and you will not like what you see.

The same goes for moisturizing products. Balance heavy moisture cleansers and moisture creams with a balancing toner that’s oil free. OR, a moisturizing toner with an oil free moisturizer. If you need to add deeper moisture, you can do so product by product. Just do it slowly to avoid skin congestion.

Conclusion

Learning how to balance products can take a little patience. If you practice the two rules above, you’ll be on the right path to achieving your best skin yet. Never hesitate to ask us for help if you’re not sure which products to match up. We are always happy to assist you.

  1. Great advice! I’ve had a lot of acne experience over the years. And, you can definitely clog your pores with improper treatment. Especially if your leave dead skin cells like one of your examples above.
